At the AWT, the water stream passes through a series of very fine filters to remove the remaining impurities from the water.

Final Filtration

In a final step, the water stream (called effluent) is exposed to ultraviolet light to kill any remaining harmful organisms and make it safe for return to the environment. Until recently, this was accomplished by adding a series of chemicals (chlorine and sodium hypochlorite). Now, we can treat the water even more effectively and we don't have to use or handle these hazardous chemicals. We feel this is a big benefit to us and to our neighbors.
